How to explain your experience in a German interview

Build a concise example that shows responsibility, action and relevance without memorising a speech.

Job interview taking place across a desk

A strong interview answer is not a complete account of your career. It helps the interviewer understand whether one part of your experience is relevant to the vacancy. That distinction is particularly useful when speaking German takes extra concentration.

Start with the requirement, not your chronology

Choose one duty in the job description, such as coordinating deliveries or preparing monthly reports. Then select one genuine situation where you carried that responsibility. Starting from the requirement prevents the answer from becoming a tour of every previous position.

Use a simple sequence: context, your responsibility, what you did and what changed. In German, short main clauses are often safer than one ambitious sentence with several subordinate clauses. Clarity matters more than displaying every grammar structure you know.

Make your own action audible

Applicants often rely on “wir” because the work was collaborative. Keep the team context, then name your contribution: “Im Team waren wir zu viert. Ich war dabei für die Abstimmung mit den Lieferanten verantwortlich.” This is precise without claiming the whole result.

Prepare for the follow-up

An interviewer may interrupt or ask for a number, difficulty or lesson. Practise one clarification phrase and one thinking phrase. “Meinen Sie die technische Umsetzung oder die Abstimmung im Team?” is more useful than guessing which detail was requested.

Do not memorise every word. Prepare the order and key vocabulary, then tell the example in slightly different language each time. That flexibility is what you need in the interview room.
